On May 31 and June 1, 2025, the III Olincopíadas were held at the USP Sports Center (Cepeusp). As is the case in everyone’s lives, many things have changed, and many have remained the same.
What’s new
New players
This year, for the first time, we had guest athletes. Given the difficulty the Veríssimos Vencedores team faced in fielding enough members to compete in certain disciplines, we invited Professor Rafael Mafei to participate in the games alongside some of his advisees. A new team was thus formed. The Veríssimos Vencedores gave way to the Veríssimos Mafeitores. Some might say that’s where the novelty ended, since the results were very similar to those of previous years. But let’s not jump to conclusions; this is a section about new developments. Let’s leave the repetitions for later.
New trophy
The Olincopíadas organizing committee doesn’t live in the past. Instead of outdated materials like gold, this year’s trophy was made on a 3D printer and was even more coveted than the trophies from previous years.
Flag
This year marked the debut of the Olincopíadas flag, which flew for two full days, accompanying our athletes in the wide variety of events in competition. What look like colorful tombstones are, in fact, the arcades of the USP Law School, in an Olincopíadas version (better to explain, because maybe not everyone will understand…).
One of the teams – VAS com Deuses – also brought its two-color flag featuring its unmistakable mascot, Patataj (pronounced “patatai”). They say that’s why it performed so exceptionally well. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves; this is a topic about what’s new. Let’s save the glorious annual traditions for later.
And why not start right now? Let’s get to the things that never change.
The repetitions
As always, three teams eager to win at any costcompete in a spirit of camaraderie gathered early in the center of the Cepeusp track and field stadium for the arrival of the olyncopic torch and to take the oath.
Another thing that hasn’t changed is the Conradicais team’s terrible taste in choosing their uniforms. Meanwhile, the VAS com Deuses team, with their uniform inspired by the Bangu soccer team, and the Veríssimos Mafeitores team, with uniforms made by a factory that produces carnival costumes in Salvador, were the big fashion stars of the weekend.
As in previous years, the weather was perfect for sports: two days of sunshine with mild temperatures. But not everyone was on the same page. Once again (no one can take it anymore), some people complained about the temperature and said they wouldn’t get in the water for the swimming events. Luckily for them, the pools were closed, because the USP Sports Center does not allow the use of the pools if the water temperature is below 18°C. The temperature was 17.5°C. Despite the insistence (from just one) of the teams, there was no way around it – no swimming. Health comes first.
Joy for some, disappointment for others—but the show must go on. On the first day, the competitions included athletics, table tennis, foosball, archery, shot put, basketball, prison dodgeball (the discipline that gave the team Veríssimos Mafeitores its first gold medal in a team sport, celebrated as if it were the overall victory at the Olincopíadas…). At the end of the day, the Conradicais team held a slight lead in the medal count.
On Sunday, a surprise: the pool was open. Even so (and this never changes either—it’s even getting boring), there were plenty of complaints from some teams, saying they wouldn’t jump in the water, blah, blah, blah. In the end, the rules were followed, and the aquatic events took place. The result was no surprise: the VAS com Deuses team won all the medals.
To keep talking about the things that never change, the same team (we don’t want to keep repeating its name, so this report doesn’t seem biased) won the gold medal in soccer, the only three-peat in team sports in the history of the Olincopíadas.
We conclude our story with what truly never changes: the VAS com Deuses team was the overall champion, setting a new record for medals (for the first time, the winning team’s medal count exceeded that of all other teams combined).
